Let’s start with this scenario: You’re getting married! (Congratulations!) The invitations have gone out, and you’ve chosen the venue, but now you’re faced with choosing between having a DJ perform, a band play or having your long lost cousin’s uncle’s friend (who they assure you is just amazing) be the singer. You mull over your options, and finally decide to choose a DJ! Except you have no clue what to ask, or what to look for when it comes to picking one.
Here are a few tips to keep you on your toes and ensure that you are hiring the best DJ available!
- Get to know your DJ, even before you meet them!
Look through their website (or social media pages), and learn a little bit about who they are, and their background as a DJ. They may even have a Youtube page where you can get a feel for their performances. - See what others have to say!
In any given situation, nothing speaks well for service than those who have experienced it. See if the DJ has a testimonials section on their website, or look through their social media pages for comments and posts from former customers. - Find out what is included in the cost
Make sure you know up-front what you’re getting for your money, not only for your own personal knowledge or references to your budget, but also to unearth any hidden fees that may come along with it. Ask if they include the cost of travel, and inquire as to whether or not a deposit has to be put down & their policies with cancellation. - Inquire about the variety of music
You might want some romantic, melodic music to sift throughout the evening air – but maybe the DJ has an affinity for dubstep. Make your tastes and preferences are known up front so the DJ can provide you with the best soundtrack to your event! - Ask if the DJ is familiar with the venue, or what they require for their setup
On occasion, a DJ will have performed at your specific venue, so they’ll know what is at their disposal. If they aren’t familiar with it however, make a list of what they need and ensure the venue can accommodate that. - Do they take requests?
This could vary from DJ to DJ. Some may take requests all night, while some may have a specified time frame to make them or simply not take them at all. It’s always good to check this; you wouldn’t want to skip out on your friend’s jam after all, would you?
